Destiny, free will, man’s struggle to evolve and be free are themes at the heart of what LOST is all about. For six years, and 117 episodes (4 remaining) viewers have watched with wonder the fate of a group of passengers that crash on an uncharted island somewhere in the south pacific. This is no ordinary island, and they are not alone on it either. Besides hearing and then seeing other people, there are polar bears, and a black smoke monster that has killed some of their friends along the way.
The purpose of the island and its inhabitants has never been revealed, at least not completely. The characters are all connected to each other besides being on the same plane, this also has never been explained, and the biggest mystery still left is how do 70+ people survive a plane breaking apart in the sky?
The Story of LOST
The story unfolded with the first 108 days on the island before six of the survivors escaped, which was told over the first 4 seasons, three years pass for those that left and those still on the island which makes up the fifth season, five of the six return, mix in some time travel and a secret group called the dharma initiative and this is the recipe for the fifth season. The story as it has been told and is full of mystery, irony and juxtapositions, an attention to detail and care has painted every scene of LOST making it one of the best television shows of our time, to see it end is necessary and fans wonder if there will ever be something of this caliber to take its place. The finale will answer the important questions of the series, most importantly why these people, why this plane. Theorists have long been at work picking the show apart and its many mysteries. In the end as long as it makes sense, the journey will have been well worth the destination.
